Introduction to the Sport of Rugby

Rugby is among the contact sports which, at present, is gaining popularity. Rugby is like football in that it is a hard-hitting physical game, and at the same time it is like soccer in that it is a game of speed and movement.

The ball used in rugby are almost the same as a football in terms of size and shape. Rugby balls are slightly larger than a football. Laces no longer come with the modern version of the rugby ball. There are mandatory and options personal equipment that a rugby player need like a mouthpiece, which is mandatory, and a soft-padded head gear, which is optional.

The ‘pitch’ is the playing field of the rugby game. The measurement of this large grassy surface is 100 meters long and 70 meters wide. There are uprights positioned on every end of the rugby field. Behind the uprights is the goals area. The minimum depth of the goal area is 10 meters but it is often 22 meters.

Rugby is played by two teams which will be represented on the pitch. There are fifteen players in all for each team. The packs and the backs makes up a team. The jersey number of pack players are from one to eight. They consist of the larger, more physical players. The fastest players in the team make up the backs and their jersey numbers are from nine to fifteen.

Scoring a goal known as ‘try’ is the main objective of this game. Touching the ball down inside your opponent’s end zone earns you a score or a try. There is no particular player that can carry the ball to the zone to make a score. If you make a try, 5 points is awarded to you. A conversion kick is then awarded to a player who makes a try. IF he is successful with his kick, 2 more points are added to the score.

You can also score points through a drop goal. A drop goal is equivalent to 3 points. If the ball is kicked through the uprights of the opposing team then you have a drop goal. To make a drop goal the ball should make contact with the ground first before you kick it.

Penalty kicks are also granted on player fouls. A penalty kick is worth three points if it is a good one. Behind the 22 meter line, a player who was fouled takes his penalty kick on the exact spot where the foul was committed.

At present, there are many professional levels of rugby. Like pro football teams in different states, rugby also has teams in different cities. Rugby also has international levels which is the most popular of all the games. International teams are made up of the best players in the city teams in different countries. These days, most people watch these international events.
